300 feet underground at Kaleshwaram.

From 2017 to 2020, a 20-member Royal Engineering Works team supplied and installed kitchen equipment, canteen furniture, stainless steel and glass railings and custom fabrication across MEIL's sites on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project in Telangana.

The project

A lift irrigation scheme built inside the rock.

The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project is the world's largest lift irrigation scheme: a chain of pump houses, tunnels and reservoirs that lifts Godavari water to the farmland of Telangana. Many of its pump houses sit deep underground, carved out of solid rock.

Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) built the pump houses. For the railing works and custom fabrication inside them — plus canteen kitchen equipment and dining tables for its sites — MEIL brought in Royal Engineering Works: not a supplier dropping stock at the gate, but a crew that could fabricate, fit and finish on site, alongside heavy machinery, at every package.

For three years, that crew was ours. Twenty people from Royal Engineering Works moved between five sites — Karimnagar, Siddipet, Gowraram, Pregnapur and Godavarikhani — delivering everything from the canteen kitchens that fed the workforce to the railings that now ring the pump units.

The conditions

Critical oxygen. A bridge four feet wide.

Much of the work happened 300 feet below ground, in tunnels where oxygen levels were critical. Every sheet, every length of pipe and every welding set had to be taken down to the work front — and the finish still had to be good enough for one of the state's showpiece plants.

At Gowraram, the railing ran along a bridge just three to four feet wide, with pumped water rushing on one side and bare rock on the other. There was no room to set up, no room to stand back, and no second chance at a weld. Our team measured, fitted and fixed that railing section by section, until the walkway was safe.

It was the hardest job we had taken on. We delivered anyway.

Open water chambers on one side, the embankment on the other, and a walkway barely wide enough for a welding set. These are the photos from the day the railing went in.

The outcome

Delivered — and inaugurated by the Chief Minister.

The project was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekar Rao — with our railings, staircases, glass balustrades and canteens part of the finished plant. For a team founded just a year before the work began, it set the standard we still hold ourselves to: if the site is hard, we plan harder.
